Obverse description The arms of Savoy — a shield charged with a plain cross — displayed centrally in the field, surmounted by a crested tournament helmet with elaborate mantling or plume rising above. The heraldic composition is rendered in the Gothic style typical of mid-fifteenth-century Savoyard coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading LVDOVIC D SABAV, identifying the issuing duke. The coin's irregular flan and hammered technique lend the design a characteristic medieval character.
