Obverse description A bold Greek cross pattée dominates the field, dividing it into four quarters. Three quarters each contain three pellets arranged in triangular groupings, while the second quarter bears a single ermine spot, a heraldic emblem of the Duchy of Brittany. The cross arms terminate with variable ornaments depending on the die variety. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, reading IOhAS DVX BRI, identifying the issuer as John, Duke of Brittany.
