Additional information

Joanna I of Naples held Provence as a separate county title, and the years covered by this issue were among the most turbulent of her reign — she had sold Avignon to Pope Clement VI in 1348 partly to fund her legal defense against accusations of complicity in her first husband Andrew of Hungary's murder. Louis I here is her second husband, Louis of Taranto, whom she married in 1347 and who was elevated to co-ruler. The pairing of their names on Provençal coinage reflects a deliberate legitimizing strategy during a period when her authority was actively contested.
