Obverse description Central device depicts the Hanoverian white horse (the Sachsenross) in a vigorous rearing pose to the right, standing upon a rocky ground line. The horse is rendered in high relief with flowing mane and tail. The circular legend KÖNIGREICH HANNOVER runs along the upper periphery, while the mintmark B appears in the lower field beneath the ground line. The coin border is decorated with a continuous ring of fine beads.

Reverse description The reverse bears a bold, centrally positioned denomination expressed in two lines as the fraction 1/2 over GROSCHEN, with the date 1862 immediately below.
