Obverse description The obverse features the crowned Saxon coat of arms — a quartered shield displaying the traditional barry of horizontal lines with a diagonal band (rautenkranz) traversing the quarters — centrally positioned in the field. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown of elaborate form. The circumferential legend reads HERZOGTH. S. COB.-GOTHA, separated by dots, with the mintmaster's mark F appearing below the shield in the lower field. The coin is struck within a fine beaded border.

Reverse description The reverse bears the denomination expressed in large, boldly struck characters occupying the central field: 1/2 above GROSCHEN, with the year of issue immediately below. The surrounding legend, divided between the upper arc reading SCHEIDE-MUNZE and the lower arc reading 60 EINEN THALER, declares the coin's status as subsidiary coinage and its relationship to the Thaler. The design is contained within a fine beaded border, consistent with the obverse.
