| Obverse description | The field is dominated by a large quartered shield of arms representing the combined heraldic claims of Austria-Burgundy-Brabant, featuring fleurs-de-lis, a lion rampant, and the Austrian fess among the quarterings, rendered in the Gothic style typical of late 15th-century Netherlandish coinage. The shield is set within a beaded inner circle. A crowned Gothic legend in uncial characters surrounds the shield, reading the name and titles of Philip as Archduke of Austria, Burgundy, and Brabant. The overall style is characteristic of hammered billon coinage of the Burgundian Netherlands, with an irregular flan and somewhat weak peripheral strike. |
