Philip III never set foot in Catalonia after his coronation visit of 1599, yet the Principality retained enough autonomy under the Crown of Aragon's constitutional framework that its coinage was struck independently at Barcelona — distinct in type and fineness from Castilian issues produced under the same king. The small cross variety distinguishes this emission from the larger cross type struck concurrently, a differentiation that appears tied to die production practices at the Barcelona mint rather than any formal monetary decree.
