The cross is enclosed within a tressure or inner circular legend band, creating a double-legend format. The interior legend, rendered in uncial Gothic script, reads IOhAnnES DVX, identifying Duke John, while the exterior legend carries the devotional inscription nOME : DOMInI : SIT BEnEDIcTVM — 'Blessed be the name of the Lord' — a common pious formula on 13th-century Low Countries grossi.
