Obverse description Central field divided into four quarters by a plain cross, each quarter bearing a rampant lion passant — the combined arms of Brabant and Limburg. The lions are rendered in a vigorous Gothic style characteristic of late 13th-century Brabantine coinage. The quartered heraldic composition fills the field entirely, framed by a beaded inner circle. The peripheral legend in uncial Gothic lettering reads: MOnETA IOhAnnES DVCIS, identifying the coin as the money of Duke John.

Reverse description A bold short cross pattée occupies the centre of the field, its arms extending nearly to the inner beaded circle. The cross is enclosed within a tressure or inner circular legend band, creating a double-legend format. The interior legend, rendered in uncial Gothic script, reads IOhAnnES DVX, identifying Duke John, while the exterior legend carries the devotional inscription nOME : DOMInI : SIT BEnEDIcTVM — 'Blessed be the name of the Lord' — a common pious formula on 13th-century Low Countries grossi. The entire design is framed by a beaded outer border on the irregular flan.
