Obverse description Facing crowned bust of King James IV set within an inner beaded circle, the king depicted with flowing hair falling to either side and wearing an ornate crown with fleurs-de-lis finials, rendered in a flat, stylised late medieval Gothic manner characteristic of Scottish hammered coinage. The royal effigy occupies the full diameter of the inner field, with fine detail visible in the crown's tressure and the hair treatment. The surrounding legend in uncial Latin characters is separated from the portrait by a beaded border, reading the royal titulature within the outer rim.

Reverse description A plain long cross extending to the coin's inner beaded border divides the reverse field into four quadrants, each containing a decorative element alternating between a six-petalled rosette and a pellet grouping, set within a double tressure of arcs typical of Scottish medieval coinage. The quadrants are further ornamented with beaded inner circles, lending the design a structured, heraldic quality. The mint name and the religious legend are inscribed in uncial Latin characters within the outer border, referencing the Edinburgh Mint and the customary Psalm-derived supplication.
