Obverse description Crowned and draped bust of James I facing right, with a ruff collar and armor visible at the shoulder. The Roman numeral II appears to the left of the bust, denoting the half groat denomination. The legend encircles the effigy, reading clockwise around the coin in Latin. The portrait is rendered in the characteristic hammered style of early Stuart coinage, with bold relief and irregular flan edges. The king is depicted with a naturalistic likeness, wearing a crown of crosses and fleurs-de-lis.
