Philip II inherited Guelders through the Habsburgs after Charles V finally subdued the duchy in 1543, ending decades of resistance under Charles of Egmond that had repeatedly drawn French military support. By the time these were struck, Guelders was fully absorbed into the Spanish Netherlands, and this coinage reflects the brief window before the fiscal and political pressures of the Dutch Revolt began disrupting mint operations across the Low Countries.
The multiple Delmonte references suggest this type spans at least two die marriages catalogued separately — collectors should verify against GH#207-6b for the specific variety before attribution.
