(Translation: Charles, by God`s grace Emperor of the Romans and King of the Spains)
Reverse description Central field displays a large quartered heraldic shield surmounted by an imperial crown, the quarters bearing the multiple arms of Charles V's composite dominions including Castile, León, Aragon, and Flanders among others, rendered with fine detail characteristic of Flemish hammered gold coinage. Fleur-de-lis ornaments appear at the crown. The surrounding circular Latin legend reads DA MICHI VIRTVTE CONTRA HOSTS TVOS, meaning 'Give me strength against your enemies,' separated by pellet stops and a fleur-de-lis initial mark. The reverse design reflects the devotional and dynastic ambitions of the Habsburg ruler during his reign over the Low Countries.
