Louis XII inherited the Duchy of Brittany through his marriage to Anne of Brittany in 1499, following the death of Charles VIII. The right to strike coinage specifically for Brittany was a jealously guarded provincial privilege, and this half écu — distinguished by the sun mintmark indicating Breton production — was among the instruments through which Louis asserted his authority over the duchy while respecting its autonomous monetary traditions.
Anne's death in 1514 effectively ended the personal union, complicating the succession that would eventually draw Brittany fully into the French crown under Francis I.
