Obverse description Central shield bearing the arms of France (three fleurs-de-lis arranged two over one) surmounted by a large royal crown, all set within a plain inner circle. The surrounding circular legend reads HENRICVS III D G FRAN ET POL REX, identifying Henry III as king of France and Poland by the grace of God. A mint letter appears at the base of the shield, below the escutcheon. The design is executed in the characteristic hammered style of late Valois royal gold coinage, with bold relief on the crowned arms.
