| Obverse description | Central field bears the crowned royal arms of France, consisting of a shield semé of fleurs-de-lis, surmounted by an ornate royal crown with cross finial and jewelled arches. The shield is rendered in high relief in the hammered gold style characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century French coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the design, separated from the central device by a beaded inner border. The composition is bold and heraldic, consistent with the écu d'or au soleil type issued under the Valois monarchs. |

| Reverse description | A floriated cross pattée with fleurs-de-lis at each terminal occupies the central field, with the mint mark letter B (for Rouen) at the centre of the cross. The four quadrants formed by the arms of the cross are each decorated with additional fleur-de-lis ornaments. A continuous Latin legend encircles the design, separated from the central motif by a beaded border, invoking the sovereignty of Christ. The overall composition is symmetrical and typical of the hammered demi-écu d'or type of the reign of Charles IX. |
