William VI of Holland struck this half écu in the wake of the Hooks and Cods civil conflict that had fractured Holland's nobility for decades — his father Albert of Bavaria had spent much of his reign managing its fallout. The "Klinckaert" name derives from the Dutch verb meaning to ring or clink, a colloquial reference applied to this gold type by contemporaries, suggesting it circulated actively enough to earn a street name.
Delmonte's G#732 catalogues it among the scarcer Holland gold fractions. Surviving examples are few.
