Obverse description Central field displays the crowned royal shield of France semé de lis, bearing three fleurs-de-lis in pale on a plain field, surmounted by a fleurs-de-lis-adorned royal crown without flanking lilies or crown ornaments to either side. The shield is enclosed within a raised inner circle, beyond which the peripheral legend in Gothic uncial script reads KAROLVS DEI GRACIA FRANCORV REX. The overall design is characteristic of the hammered gold écu tradition established by earlier Valois monarchs, rendered with bold relief typical of late 15th-century French royal coinage.
