Gábor Báthori seized the Transylvanian throne in 1608 through a combination of noble faction support and Ottoman acquiescence, deposing Zsigmond Rákóczi after barely a year in power. His reign proved turbulent enough that mint output was irregular, and half-gara denominations from his earliest regnal year are notably scarcer than those struck after his administration stabilized — briefly — around 1610.
He was assassinated by his own hajdú bodyguards in 1613, ending a reign marked by conflicts with both Habsburg and Ottoman interests simultaneously.
