Rama IV — Mongkut — authorised gold fractional coinage partly to facilitate trade with European merchants arriving in increasing numbers following the Bowring Treaty of 1855, which forced Siam to open its ports and fix tariffs. The traditional bullet (pod duang) coinage that had served the kingdom for centuries was wholly impractical for that commerce. These small gold pieces bridged two monetary worlds simultaneously.
KM#116 is scarce in any condition. The Royal Siamese Mint at this period was still operating under significant technical constraints, and production numbers for the gold fractions were never large.
