Rama IV — better known in the West as King Mongkut — came to the throne in 1851 after spending 27 years as a Buddhist monk, during which time he taught himself Latin and studied Western astronomy with enough precision to correctly predict the 1868 solar eclipse to the minute. His early coinage reflects a monarchy acutely aware of foreign pressure: the Bowring Treaty of 1855 would soon force Siam to open its economy to British trade, and the royal mint was already producing pieces that could hold their own against European currency on credibility alone. This fractional gold issue belongs to that transitional moment.
