Obverse description Central device features the cantonal arms of Appenzell Ausserrhoden: a shield bearing a rampant bear passant to the right, with the initials V and R flanking the figure, surmounted by a radiant sun above the shield's chief. The shield is flanked by decorative foliate sprays, an olive branch to the left and a palm branch to the right. The curved legend CANTON APPENZELL arcs across the upper field. The coin exhibits a plain inner border with a reeded outer rim.
