Pattern coinage from the July Monarchy was rarely struck for circulation testing — most served as presentation pieces for ministers, foreign dignitaries, or the king himself. This 1837 demi-franc essai in gold almost certainly never passed through a cashier's hands.
Louis-Philippe's administration undertook several quiet reviews of the franc coinage system during the 1830s, partly in response to ongoing silver shortages and partly to modernize hub and die production at the Quai de Conti. KM# Pn70 survives in very small numbers.
