The shield is rendered in a plain, heraldic style typical of early 14th-century hammered coinage. A partial circular legend in uncial Latin characters runs along the outer field, reading EDV COmES, identifying the issuer as Count Edward of Savoy. |

A cross pattée appears at the top of the outer legend, which runs in uncial Latin characters around the periphery, reading D' SABAVDI, an abbreviated form of 'de Sabaudia' (of Savoy), identifying the dynasty. |
