Philip the Handsome's gold coinage from Brabant exists within one of the more chaotic monetary administrations of the Low Countries. His reign over the Burgundian Netherlands was interrupted by repeated conflicts with the Estates over fiscal policy, and his absences — particularly the two voyages to Castile to assert his wife Joanna's inheritance — left mint supervision inconsistent. The half florin denomination was deliberately kept at reduced fineness compared to earlier Burgundian issues, a concession to the metal shortages and debasement pressures that plagued the region from the 1490s onward.
Philip died in Burgos in September 1506, cutting this series short at six years.
