Selim III came to the throne in 1789 with genuine reformist ambitions — his Nizam-ı Cedid program sought to modernize the Ottoman military along European lines, funded in part by a new treasury kept deliberately separate from the traditional imperial finances. The fractional gold denominations struck during his reign served partly to supply that parallel fiscal apparatus.
He was deposed in 1807 by Janissary-led opposition to his reforms, strangled the following year on orders of his successor Mustafa IV. The findik series ended with him.
