The half farthing was introduced in 1828 primarily for use in Ceylon, where small-denomination coinage was needed for everyday transactions at a time when the British colonial administration required a coin worth a quarter of a penny. It was technically legal tender in the United Kingdom as well, though it found little practical use there — the denomination was simply too small to be meaningful in domestic commerce.
Minting continued under William IV and Victoria, making the George IV issues the first of a short-lived series that survived until 1856.
