Faint traces of an Arabic legend are discernible but largely illegible due to the crude casting and subsequent wear; the field is otherwise flat and unadorned. The irregular flan shape and porous surface texture are characteristic features of Moroccan cast bronze falus coinage of the mid-nineteenth century. |

Moulay Abd al-Rahman struck these small bronzes during a period of acute external pressure — French forces had defeated his army at the Battle of Isly in August 1844, and the subsequent Treaty of Lalla Maghnia forced Morocco into a border settlement deeply unfavorable to the sultanate. Coinage of this type, produced across multiple mints without attribution on the flan itself, makes precise provenance nearly impossible to establish, which is partly why the C#121 designation covers considerable variation in fabric and strike quality.
