Mahmud Shah II ruled the Malwa Sultanate during its terminal decline, squeezed between the expanding Sultanate of Gujarat to the west and the Rajput confederacies to the north. He was ultimately deposed and imprisoned by Medini Rai, the powerful Rajput minister who had effectively seized control of the administration — a reversal that eventually drew Mahmud Shah to seek Gujarati intervention, ending Malwa's independence entirely by 1531.
The fractional falus denominations of this period circulated in local bazaar economies where copper small change was the practical medium of everyday exchange. Gujarat absorbed the Malwa mint infrastructure shortly after.
