Obverse description Right-facing draped bust of Queen Maria I, her hair elaborately dressed and piled high in the fashionable late 18th-century coiffure, adorned with ornamental combs and ribbons. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine engraving detail. The encircling Latin legend reads MARIA.I.D.G.PORT.ET.ALG.REGINA, denoting her title as Queen of Portugal and the Algarves by the Grace of God. The date appears in the lower exergual area beneath the bust.
