Maria I ascended the Portuguese throne in 1777 following the death of her father José I, reigning jointly with her husband Pedro III until his death in 1786 — the precise window this issue spans. The dual-mint production split between Lisboa and Bahia reflects Brazil's role as the primary source of Portuguese crown gold during this period; the Bahia mint was processing colonial gold on-site rather than shipping raw metal across the Atlantic.
The joint reign coinage was discontinued abruptly upon Pedro's death in May 1786, after which Maria continued as sole monarch. Gomes distinguishes the two mint outputs as MP 21 and MP 22 respectively.
