Obverse description Draped bust of King José I facing right, wearing a laurel wreath and an elaborately curled powdered wig rendered in fine Baroque style, occupying the majority of the obverse field. The portrait displays strong classical engraving with well-defined facial features and detailed drapery at the truncation. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy, reading IOSEPHUS (or JOSEPHUS on some dies) I D G PORT ET ALG REX, separated by stops. The mint date appears in the lower exergual area below the bust truncation. The entire design is enclosed by a finely executed milled or rope border.
