Reverse description The Portuguese royal arms displayed in full heraldic composition at the centre of the field, consisting of the escutcheon bearing the traditional quinas (five bezants arranged in cross) with a bordure of castles, all rendered in fine relief. The shield is supported on each side by elaborate Baroque cartouche mantling. Above the arms sits the Portuguese royal crown surmounted by a cross, finely detailed with pearls and arches. The entire device fills the field nearly to the rope or milled border, with no peripheral legend, giving the reverse a bold, armorial character typical of Portuguese gold coinage of the period.
