| Reverse description | The arms of Monaco — a shield fusilly (lozengy) of argent and gules arranged in four columns — displayed in the centre of the field, surmounted by a princely coronet adorned with fleurons and pearls. A motto ribbon or label appears within the upper portion of the shield beneath the coronet. The circumferential Latin legend, giving Louis I's titles as Duke of Valentinois and Peer of France, runs around the periphery with the date 1666 appearing in the upper portion of the legend. |

| Additional information |
Louis I ruled Monaco under French protection following the Treaty of Péronne in 1641, which ended decades of Spanish suzerainty over the principality. His coinage of the 1660s was struck in small quantities befitting a territory of Monaco's size, and survivors in any grade are genuinely scarce — the Gadoury reference designates this as one of the rarer emissions of his reign. The "a" variety distinction in MC56a relates to subtle die differences documented across the short two-year production window.
