Obverse description The Basel basilisk, depicted as a crowned dragon with spread wings and a serpentine tail, stands facing right atop a ground line, clutching an oval heraldic shield bearing a diagonal staff — the arms of Basel. The creature is rendered in fine relief with detailed plumage and scaled body. The mintmark 'S' appears in the exergue below the ground line. The coin's outer border consists of fine milled denticles.
