The VOC struck these small silver fractions specifically for circulation in Batavia and the company's Java operations, where local trade demanded denominations far below what Dutch domestic coinage provided. The duit series occupied a peculiar administrative space — issued under the Holland chamber of the VOC rather than the States of Holland directly, making them corporate currency in the strictest sense.
Production across this eight-year window coincided with the Seven Years' War, during which VOC shipping lanes faced considerable disruption and the company's finances began the slow deterioration that would end in its dissolution in 1799.
