Obverse description A fully armored knight on a charging horse prancing to the right, the rider raising a drawn sword aloft in his right hand; the arms of Utrecht appear beneath the horse, all contained within a beaded inner circle. The powerful equestrian figure, which gave rise to the popular name 'Zilveren Rijder' (Silver Rider), is rendered in the vigorous Baroque style characteristic of Dutch provincial coinage of the mid-seventeenth century. The surrounding legend runs along the outer rim between the inner and outer circles.
