Utrecht began striking the half Ducaton — the "Zilveren Rijder" series named for its mounted knight — as a fractional complement to the full Ducaton already circulating across the Dutch Republic. These coins moved heavily through the colonial trade networks of the VOC and WIC, and large quantities were shipped to the Dutch Atlantic and Asian possessions where Spanish silver had previously dominated small-denomination settlement. By the 1780s, provincial minting had become politically charged: the Patriot movement's challenges to Orangist authority created administrative disruptions at several Holland and Utrecht mint facilities.
The long production window of 1761–1794 means die quality degrades noticeably in later strikes.
