John Philip of Lamberg served as Prince-Bishop of Passau from 1689 until his death in 1712, presiding over a diocese caught between Habsburg imperial politics and the upheavals of the War of the Spanish Succession. Passau's ecclesiastical mint retained the right to strike gold through this period, though output was modest — half-ducat denominations from this bishopric in any year are genuinely scarce survivors.
Fr#2070 places this piece within Friedberg's classification of Austrian and related states gold, a grouping that underscores just how tightly Passau's monetary output was bound to Vienna's orbit rather than any independent monetary policy.
