Beschrijving keerzijde Central field features a large Gothic crowned letter 'Y' (for Ysabel/Isabel), surmounted by a royal crown with fleur-de-lis finials, flanked on either side by small circular pellets and adorned with fleur-de-lis ornaments in the lower field. The monogram is enclosed within an inner beaded circle. The surrounding legend in Gothic Latin script reads the royal titulature of Queen Isabella of Castile, with words separated by decorative stops, all contained within an outer beaded border on an irregularly shaped hammered flan.

Aanvullende informatie

This issue dates to the 1497 Ordinance of Medina del Campo, the same sweeping monetary reform that established the Excelente as Spain's prestige gold coinage and standardized fineness across the Castilian mints. The half ducat was struck at multiple mints simultaneously — Burgos, Seville, Toledo, and Granada among them — which accounts for the range of Calicó references assigned to what is nominally a single type. Mint attribution often hinges on small differences in the assayer's mark rather than any major design variation.
