| Obverse description | Armored and draped bust of Landgrave Ernest Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt facing right, his hair rendered in flowing curls in the late Baroque style. The effigy displays elaborate plate armor with ornamental detailing at the shoulder. A circular Latin title legend surrounds the portrait, reading FR LV I D G HA LAND G PR HERSF, abbreviating his full princely titles. The coin field is plain, and the entire design is contained within a milled border. |

| Reverse description | The quartered arms of Hesse-Darmstadt displayed within an elaborately shaped oval cartouche, surmounted by a large electoral-style crown that divides the date 1703 to either side. The cartouche is flanked by two symmetrically arranged palm branches, symbolic of peace and virtue. The circumferential Latin motto legend PIETATE ET IVSTITIA — meaning 'By Piety and Justice' — runs around the periphery of the field. The overall composition reflects the high Baroque heraldic style characteristic of early eighteenth-century German princely coinage. |
