Struck to mark the bicentennial of the Augsburg Confession — the foundational Lutheran doctrinal statement presented to Emperor Charles V on June 25, 1530 — this piece belongs to a wave of commemorative coinage issued across Protestant German states in 1730. Ulm, a Free Imperial City with deep Reformation ties, had formally adopted Lutheranism in 1531, just a year after the Confession itself was read. The centennial in 1630 passed during the Thirty Years' War, making 1730 the first opportunity the city had to commemorate the event with any civic confidence.
