| Obverse description | Irregular copper flan bearing Tamil script legend arranged in two registers separated by a horizontal line. The characters, reading 'Karikal', are boldly incused in the local Tamil style characteristic of early French India hammered coinage. The overall design is typical of the crudely struck indigenous-style issues produced at the Karikal mint in the eighteenth century. |
