| Obverse description | Full-length allegorical figure of Liberty striding left, draped in the American flag and wearing a Phrygian cap, her right hand extended forward and her left arm bearing branches of laurel and oak. Rays of the rising sun emanate from the lower left field, symbolizing a new dawn. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper rim, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears in two lines in the right field, and the date is inscribed in the exergue below the ground line. The composition, executed in high relief in the Art Nouveau style, was designed by Adolph Alexander Weinman. |
