The legend VICTORIA appears across the upper field and QUEEN across the lower field, both separated from the effigy by a decorative Greek key border running along the inner edge of the coin. The portrait is engraved in high relief in the style of Leonard Charles Wyon.

Reverse description Central design featuring a circular Chinese maze or fretwork pattern composed of interlocking lobed cartouches, within which four Chinese characters are arranged in a cruciform layout reading Hong Kong Half Dollar. The English legend HALF DOLLAR arcs across the upper field and HONG KONG with the date appears across the lower field, all framed by the same Greek key decorative border as the obverse. The overall design integrates Eastern and Western iconographic elements characteristic of colonial Hong Kong coinage.
