Thirteen six-pointed stars are arranged around the periphery, and a pair of arrowheads flanks the date in the exergue below, added to denote the reduced silver weight standard established by the Act of February 21, 1853. The design is executed in the neoclassical style originated by Christian Gobrecht. |

The arrows flanking the date on these pieces are not decorative — they signal a mandated weight reduction enacted by Congress in February 1853, cutting the half dollar from 13.36 grams to 12.44 grams in direct response to rising silver bullion prices that had made the old coins worth more melted than spent. The arrows were retained only through 1855, then dropped, leaving the reduced-weight coins to circulate without any visual distinction from that point forward.
