Congress authorized this commemorative in 1935 specifically to support the San Diego exposition celebrating the 400th anniversary of Cabrillo's landing on the California coast — though the event itself was a financial lifeline for a city still climbing out of the Depression. The mint struck both 1935 and 1936 dated coins, and the San Francisco Mint produced all pieces despite the "S" mintmark being absent on the 1935 issue, which was struck without one.
The 1936-D is the genuinely scarce date, with a mintage of just 30,092 — the Denver Mint's involvement was a late political accommodation.
