Obverse description A seated allegorical figure of Liberty, helmeted and draped, occupies the central field, facing slightly left and holding an upright spear or staff in her raised right hand. To her left stands a grizzly bear, the symbol of California, while to her right rests a shield bearing a Medusa-like head and a cluster of grapes, with the word EUREKA inscribed above. A sailing vessel appears in the left background field. The circumferential legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs across the upper border, while HALF DOLLAR curves along the lower border and LIBERTY appears at the base of the design between the two.
