Lawrence County, Indiana was organized in 1818, named for Captain James Lawrence of "Don't give up the ship" fame. This 1968 brass piece marks the county's 150th year — one of hundreds of locally issued trade tokens and commemorative half dollars produced by American counties and municipalities during the 1950s–70s boom in civic celebration coinage. Bedford, the county seat, is the limestone capital of the United States; its quarries supplied stone for the Empire State Building and the Pentagon.
