Descripción del anverso Left-facing truncated bust of President John F. Kennedy, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair, occupies the central field. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper periphery, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed in two lines across the lower field flanking the truncation. The date appears along the bottom rim, with the mint mark positioned between the numerals of the year just below the truncation. The portrait was modeled by Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts, based on his 1962 presidential medal.

Congress authorized the switch from 40% silver to base metal clad in 1971, a direct consequence of silver's rising spot price making the 1965–1970 40% silver Kennedys worth more in metal than face value. Hoarding had kept nearly every silver-bearing Kennedy out of circulation, so the transition was largely academic — the half dollar had already ceased to function as an everyday coin long before the silver was stripped out.

By the 1980s, Federal Reserve banks were simply stockpiling them. Demand from circulation had collapsed almost entirely.
